There are several times when the printer shows the error message ‘trying to lift tray’ or ‘trying to lift tray 3’ and so on if there are multiple paper trays. Troubleshooting Steps HP Printer Error Lifting
If that’s the case, there are few things a user can do to trouble shoot the HP Printer Error before seeking technical help.
- First check whether the paper tray is overloaded, if so please take out the chunk, the best number is to keep 25-30 sheets of paper in the tray to check if the printer is working properly.
- Next check the manual feed mode is on, if it is turned on, the printer will not lift the paper automatically.
- Turn on the printer in case it is off, go to your computer and select the printer from your device and go to the printing preferences and change the manual feed to auto select option. Press the Ok button to apply the changes.
- Next try to print the document if it prints the problem is resolved.

- Check papers on your tray, in case there is damaged paper it might not be lifted. Remove the damaged paper and align them properly, even if a paper is pushed further into the machine, it might not get lifted for printing.
- Try to print the pages if it prints, the error is fixed, if not you can follow the next step.
- You can try to clean the pick-up roller, at times if dirt and grime accumulates on the pickup roller it might stop picking up the papers. To clean it, be sure to use a lint free cloth, let the machine cool down completely and turn off the power supply.
- After cleaning the pick-up roller, try to print a document; if the printing takes place then the error is fixed. If not there are few other ways that the error can be resolved.
- Check whether the gear on the right side of the tray in a half shaped moon that lifts the paper is working properly or not. You can check that manually whether the gear is moving or not, if it is moving then the tray must get lifted too.
- Other than these you can try to do the Manual Sensor test to check the surface sensor. Also select Troubleshooting menu 2 to resolve the issue.
- Next step try to reconnect the cassette lifter motor and the DC controller using the connectors.
- Even after this the lifting error message continues change the lifter drive unit. Also try to do a component test to verify that there are no issues with the lifting motor.
