1. Firstly, lift the scanner cover. You can do so by lifting the plastic tabs that are present on both the sides into a position when it securely locks itself in the locked open position. It is important to do so carefully to prevent any unwanted damage to the hardware.
2. Lift the scanner head to a moderate height.
3. Underneath, you should carefully examine if there are any bits of paper, or dust, or staple or paper clip, as these bits and pieces can disturb proper functioning of your HP printer.

2. Now you need to clean the encoder strip. To do so you now need to lift the scanner to the right-hand side and place it safely under the cover.
3. Grab a lint free cloth. Carefully hold the encoder in your hands. Slide the lint free cloth gently on it to clean properly.
