Step 1: Perform the simple RESET.
Most of the errors of the HP Printers and scanners are resolved by performing the simple reset. You need to carry on following steps to perform the simple reset.
- Turn the printer on.
- Wait for the printer to go silent and idle before proceeding to the next step.
- When the Printer is already ON, remove the power cable from the back of the Printer.
- Even unplug the Printer from the wall socket.
- Wait for at least a minute.
- Plug the power cable back on to the printer as well as on the wall socket.
- If the Printer does not turn on automatically, then turn on the Printer.
- Again wait for the printer to go silent and idle.
Now give a print job to see if the error has been resolved. If not then go to the next step.
Step 2: Cleaning the scanner cable.
To perform this step the right side of the scanner printer will need to be opened using a screwdriver. Follow the following steps to clean the scanner cable.
- First of all switch the printer/scanner off.
- Remove the power cable from the back of the printer cum scanner.
- Now open the right side of the cover at the side of the display using the screwdriver.
- On opening you will find there are two cable white and black. White cable refers to the display panel cable and the black cable refers to the scanner cable.
- Remove the black coloured scanner cable and properly clean it. You can use an eraser to clean the same. You need to be very careful in this step as the cable is very delicate and a little damage to the same will leave the scanner non functional.
- Plug the cable back in place and plug on the scanner cum printer and turn it on.

- Lifting the panel you will see gears under it which help the scanner move. Sometimes the gears do not move properly or the motor is faulty leading the scanner non-functional.
- You will need to change the motor of the scanner. After changing the motor while the scanner is still open plugin to see if the scanner has started moving.
- If the gears start moving it means that the problem was there with the motor. Replace it and close everything as it was very carefully.
Plug in the scanner again. You will see that the error 12 has disappeared.
